Submitting once, not three times

An applicant answers the form's questions and submits with their name and mobile number, and a confirmation SMS goes to that number. Coming back later on the same number returns the application already in progress rather than creating a second one, so nobody appears twice on the list.

How it is done today

A parent loses the connection halfway through and starts again. In the office the same boy's name then appears three times with different details in each, and somebody has to ring round to work out which is real. The applicant, meanwhile, has no idea whether anything arrived at all.

How it works

  1. 1

    Gaps are caught before sending

Required fields left empty are highlighted before anything is sent, so the applicant is not bounced back with an error from the server.

  2. 2

The number is brought to one form

The mobile number is checked and then normalised, so the same number written two different ways still counts as the same applicant.

  3. 3

    One number, one application

If that number already has a live application on this form, it is returned as it stands instead of a second row, and the applicant carries on.

  4. 4

    Confirmed by SMS

A message with the applicant's name and the class name goes to their number once the application lands, so there is no doubt it arrived.

  5. 5

Tied to the version it started on

The application stays attached to the form version it began on, so a later edit by the teacher does not change the terms mid-way through.

What runs on its own, what stays in your hands

What happens automatically

Recognising a returning number and sending the confirmation SMS both happen on their own.

What you control

Which questions the form asks and which of them are required is decided by the teacher beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

If no SMS arrives, did the application fail?

No, it went through. The message is sent as a separate attempt and a failure there does not undo the application. The return page can be used to check where it stands.

What happens on submitting twice with one number?

The application already in progress for that number on that form comes back instead of a new one being created, so the teacher's list keeps one row per applicant.

How long does a submission last?

An application is stored with a seven day window. If verification and the remaining steps are not finished inside it, the application moves to an expired state and is listed that way.
