Read and unread, on your terms
Each item's menu offers the opposite of its current state, so you can put something back to unread after opening it. A separate button at the top of the inbox clears everything at once, covering both your unread notifications and your conversations.
How it is done today
Opening an important notice takes it out of the unread list, which on a busy day is how it gets forgotten. The opposite is just as bad: once two hundred unread notices have piled up the number means nothing and nobody looks at it any more.
How it works
- 1
The menu offers the opposite
An item that is read offers mark as unread, and one that is unread offers mark as read, so you never have to remember which state it was in.
- 2
What changes by kind
A notification gets a read flag and a timestamp, an announcement gets your own read record added or removed, and a conversation has its unread counter cleared.
- 3
Conversations do not go back
For a message thread only marking it read does anything. There is no way to push a conversation back into the unread state afterwards.
- 4
Clear it all at once
The button at the top of the inbox clears every unread notification you hold and resets the counters on all your conversations together.
- 5
Your own notices only
Marking checks that the notice belongs to you first, so nobody can reach across and change the state of somebody else's inbox.
What runs on its own, what stays in your hands
What happens automatically
Working out which record to change for each kind of item is handled for you.
What you control
What stays unread, and when the whole list gets cleared, is entirely your call.

Frequently asked questions
Can one source be cleared on its own?
No. The clear-all button takes no filter, so it covers every unread notification and every conversation together. There is no way to clear only one kind of notice.
Does marking unread resend the notice?
Nothing is sent again. The item simply goes back among the unread ones and counts towards the unread total, so it is in front of you next time you open the inbox.
Could somebody else mark my notices read?
No. A marking request checks that the notice belongs to the caller, and nothing changes if it does not. Another person's inbox counts cannot be touched from outside.
