Clearing out what you have dealt with

Removing an inbox item takes it away once you confirm. A notification or system alert really is deleted, while a message conversation is not: only your place in it is put aside. Announcements cannot be removed, and the control does not appear on them.

How it is done today

Last month's fee receipts and an old cancelled-class alert sitting in the list make today's important item slower to find. But if clearing a conversation out of your own list also wiped it for everybody else, nobody would dare touch it.

How it works

  1. 1

    Confirmed first

Pressing the remove control brings up a confirmation, so a stray tap cannot take something away that you wanted to keep.

  2. 2

    Notifications really go

Removing a notification or a system alert deletes the record held against your name, and there is no bringing it back afterwards.

  3. 3

A conversation only leaves your list

Removing a message thread does not delete it. Your place in it is set aside, and the conversation and its messages stay intact for everyone else.

  4. 4

    Announcements cannot be removed

An announcement is refused by the route, and the screen does not even show a remove control on one in the first place.

  5. 5

    Your own inbox only

Removing checks that the item belongs to you, so nothing can be taken out of anybody else's inbox from outside.

What runs on its own, what stays in your hands

What happens automatically

Deciding which kinds of item are deleted and which are only set aside is handled for you.

What you control

What gets removed is your decision, and declining the confirmation leaves everything where it was.

Frequently asked questions

Can a deleted notification be recovered?

No. There is no restore route for a deleted notification and the screen does not offer one, which is exactly why the confirmation step exists before it goes.

Do others notice when you remove a conversation?

No. The conversation and its messages stay as they were for the other participants. The only difference is that it no longer appears in your own inbox list.

Why can announcements not be removed?

An announcement goes to everybody, so it has no per-person removal. The route refuses the request and the screen leaves the remove control off it entirely.
