Set the password and you are already in

Somebody signing in for the first time uses the code from their phone to set a password. The code is consumed at this step, so it will not work a second time. Once the password is saved you are signed in directly, without going back round to the sign-in screen.

How it is done today

Being sent back to a sign-in screen to type the password you just invented is one step too many, and it is exactly where people mistype the brand new password and get stuck.

How it works

  1. 1

    Enter the code

Give the code that arrived on your phone. This step uses it up, so it will not work again afterwards.

  2. 2

    Choose your password

Set a password you will remember. This becomes the password on your account.

  3. 3

    Go straight in

Once the password is saved you are signed in immediately, with no separate sign-in step to go through.

  4. 4

Sign in by hand if something fails

If the direct sign-in does not happen, the password is still saved, and you can sign in with it yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Can the same code be used again?

No. Setting a password consumes the code, so anything later needs a fresh one requested.

Do I have to sign in after setting the password?

Usually not. You are signed in as the password is saved, so the step does not have to be done twice.

What if I already had a password?

The new one replaces it, which is how a forgotten password gets changed along this same path.
