Marking up the page itself

A teacher can place ticks, crosses and comments straight onto the image of the script, the way a red pen works on paper. Change a mark and the symbols on the page are laid out again to match, so the marks and the page never tell different stories.

How it is done today

A number on its own does not show a student where they went wrong. On paper the red pen is the teaching: which line was crossed out, where the marks were lost. When a digital system hands back only a figure, that part of the learning disappears entirely.

How it works

  1. 1

    Mark on the page

Ticks, crosses and comments go exactly where they belong on the image of the script, not into a separate list.

  2. 2

    Symbols follow the marks

Change a mark and the symbols on the page are derived again from the new marks, so the two never disagree.

  3. 3

    Your own marks stay yours

Comments and marks you placed yourself sit on top and are not wiped out by the automatic symbols.

  4. 4

    Saved together

Annotations, marks and feedback are saved in one go, so there is no second save to remember.

What runs on its own, what stays in your hands

What happens automatically

The system lays out the symbols from the marks and redraws them whenever a mark changes.

What you control

Where a mark goes on the page and what the comment says is the teacher's. What they place sits on top of the automatic symbols.

Frequently asked questions

Do page marks go stale when a mark changes?

No. Change a mark and the symbols on the page are derived again from the new marks, so the list of marks and the page never tell different stories.

Are my own comments wiped out?

No. The automatic symbols are laid down first and your own marks and comments sit over the top. Nothing you place is removed automatically.

Do annotations have to be saved separately?

No. Annotations, marks and feedback are saved together, so one save finishes the whole script.

Can you annotate while marking is running?

No. Annotation comes after marking finishes, because annotations are saved alongside the mark corrections and the symbols are derived from the marks.
