When a total is held back

Anything unusual noticed during marking is flagged, and the flags come in two kinds. Most are advisory and do not stop a mark being published. But any one of four serious flags withholds the total, and the teacher is told why in both languages.

How it is done today

The real fear with automatic marking is that something went wrong, nobody noticed, and the results went out anyway. The error then surfaces in a phone call from a parent, after publication, when correcting it means questioning the whole batch.

How it works

  1. 1

    Unusual things are flagged

A page count that does not add up, writing cut off mid-word, handwriting that changes: each is recorded separately.

  2. 2

    Advisory or blocking

Most flags only inform, such as rough work excluded or a teacher's earlier marks on the page. Those do not stop publication.

  3. 3

    Four serious ones

Handwriting mismatch, more than one student's work in a batch, a question paper set that does not match, and marking that failed. Any one withholds the total.

  4. 4

    The reason, in both languages

When a total is held back, the reason is written in Bangla and English, so the teacher knows exactly where to look.

What the AI agent does, what you approve

What the AI agent does

The system flags what looks unusual on its own, and holds back the total when the flag is a serious one.

What you approve

Only a teacher can release a withheld total. The system accuses nobody; it points at the place worth looking.

What it looks like

Sample script-marking screen with a review marker where the total would be.

Frequently asked questions

Does a withheld total mean cheating was found?

No. Flags are reasons to look, not accusations. Handwriting can look different for innocent reasons. The judgement is the teacher's, not the system's.

Which problems withhold a total?

Four: handwriting mismatch, more than one student's work in one batch, a question paper set that does not match, and marking that failed outright. Every other flag only informs.

Are instructions written on the script obeyed?

No. Text on a script that tries to influence the marking is ignored, and the fact that it was ignored is flagged separately rather than passing unnoticed.

Is a removed page only advisory?

No, and that is deliberate. Dropping a page the student actually wrote on cannot be undone, so which pages were removed stays visible for the teacher to check.
